John Cooper, owner of the Cooper Car Company and designer and builder of Formula One and rally cars, saw the potential of the Mini for competition. In 1961, after John Cooper appealed to BMC management, he collaborated with them to create the first Mini Cooper.
Since this partnership, performance versions of Mini models have continued to use the name Cooper.
Mini vehicles have been active in rallying and the Mini Cooper S won the Monte Carlo Rally on three occasions, in 1964, 1965 and 1967. Mini has participated in the World Rally Championship since 2011 through the Prodrive WRC Team.
