The Porsche 904 is an automobile which was produced by Porsche in Germany in 1964 and 1965.
The 904's launch coincided with the original 911. First known as the 901, it was presented in October at the 1964 Paris Auto Salon. Immediately after, French car maker Peugeot objected to Porsche using any three digit number where the middle number was 0, having already sold many models with that scheme.
To avoid this issue, Porsche simply replaced the 0 with a 1, christening the 911. They chose, however, to simply remove the number designation for the 904.
As such, it was officially called the Porsche Carrera GTS, though it held the 904 name as an internal moniker.
